1983年，《国际组织》杂志出版了新现实主义者克拉斯纳主持的专辑，收录了新现实主义者与新自由主义者共同讨论国际机制问题的论文。这实际上是确认了新自由主义作为一个独立研究范式的学术地位。1986年基欧汉主编的《新现实主义及其批判》一书出版，以基欧汉、拉格等为代表的自由主义以及批判理论和后现代理论家对新现实主义进行了全面的批评。1988年奈首先使用新自由主义与新现实主义的两分法。1993年大卫？鲍德温主编《新现实主义与新自由主义》论文集。至此新自由主义的地位完全确立。〃新自由制度主义〃则是现实主义理论家格里科（在约瑟夫？奈的提示下）首先使用的。详见Joseph
